Let's concentrate on the character first.
His backstory (family, education, relationships, where he grew up).
(We talked about either his family or his ex-fiancee's family is loaded.)
(We talked about the possibility that he screwed up what could have been a great life.)
His outlook on life - point of view, attitude, demeanor.
His character flaw/weakness.
How he wound up being a couch surfer.
(We talked about his credit being shot - perhaps because his identity was stolen - and it could've been stolen by a girl he was with - possibly his ex-fiancee. If his credit is shot, he can't get an apartment.)
What he wants.
Obstacles to that goal.
